Introduction / History

The Patpatar, (AKA, Gelik) are an indigenous people of New Ireland Province in Papua New Guinea, living primarily in the south?central part of the province around the Namatanai District. Their identity is tied to the Patpatar language, also known as Gelik, which belongs to the Austronesian family of languages spoken along coastal and inland areas of this part of New Ireland. The Patpatar language has several dialects that bond the villages and families who identify with this cultural and linguistic tradition.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Patpatar communities are typically rural and village?based, with daily life shaped by the land, gardens, and nearby waterways. Families cultivate staple foods in garden plots, including root crops and vegetables suited to the tropical environment of the island. Fishing and gardening are commons ways of providing for households, and people may also travel short distances to nearby villages or local markets for trade or community events. Extended families and clan networks are central to village life, with relatives cooperating in agricultural work, building homes, and caring for children and elders. Social relationships and shared responsibilities help sustain community life across generations.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Christianity is the dominant religious identity among the Patpatar people, and church life plays an important role in many communities. People participate in worship, Scripture?centered teaching, and fellowship that help shape family values and moral guidance. While some customary ideas or traditional understandings may continue in cultural contexts, the publicly expressed religious identity of the community is Christian. Scripture engagement and local church involvement are part of how families gather and support one another.

What Are Their Needs?

The Patpatar people benefit from continued discipleship that deepens their understanding of Scripture and encourages faithful Christian living. Supporting pastors and church leaders with biblical teaching resources and training helps strengthen local congregations. Access to Scripture in the Patpatar language, including portions and the New Testament, aids families and churches in engaging deeply with God's word in their heart language. Opportunities for leadership development among youth and young adults can also help build a strong foundation for the future of Christian witness in these communities. In addition to spiritual growth, improved access to education, healthcare, and sustainable livelihoods supports the overall well?being of families and villages across the region.

Prayer Items

Pray that Patpatar believers will grow in spiritual maturity and develop a deep love for the word of God.
Pray for pastors and church leaders to be strengthened with wisdom, courage, and love as they guide their congregations.
Pray that families and young people will follow Jesus Christ wholeheartedly and build strong Christian homes.
